DermUtopia’s Guide to Acne Types

Cystic Acne
is characterized by inflamed, painful nodules that can cause scarring of the skin. It is usually seen in adolescents and young adults, more commonly affecting males. Causes may include genetics, medications, hormonal changes, and diet.

Treatment options for cystic acne may include oral medications (such as spironolactone or Accutane), topical medicine (such as tretinoin cream or Differin gel), chemical peels, and more.

Comedone Acne includes open comedones (blackheads) and closed comedones (whiteheads) that are commonly found in the “T-Zone” of the face. Comedone acne typically occurs due to an increased production of an oily substance known as sebum by the sebaceous glands.

Treatments for comedone acne may include chemical peels to unplug the pores, topical medicine (such as tretinoin cream or Differin gel), or oral medications depending on acne severity.

Pityrosporum Folliculitis is characterized by small itchy papules/pustules commonly found on the forehead, upper back, and chest. This form of breakout is common in young adult males and athletes. Pityrosporum folliculitis is caused by yeast and can develop due to humid climates, increased sebum production, or excessive sweating.

Pityrosporum folliculitis treatment typically includes oral or topical anti-yeast medications and oil free cleansers.

Demodex Folliculitis. Demodex are microscopic mites that live on the skin in most people. Sometimes the skin and hair follicles react to these mites, creating small, red and white pustules on the cheeks and nose. Dr. Dintiman can perform a quick, painless skin scrape to identify the presence of these mites under a microscope.

DermUtopia uses a compounded cream made by Skin Medicinals called “Triple Cream” to unplug the pores and reduce redness caused by demodex.
