What is IPL?
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a non-invasive skin treatment that uses high-intensity pulses of light to target specific skin concerns. These pulses of light allows IPL to treat a variety of skin issues, from hyperpigmentation (sun spots, age spots, and freckles) to blood vessels and redness. The light energy absorbed by your skin is converted into heat, which either breaks down unwanted pigmentation or causes the blood vessels to collapse and fade.
At DermUtopia, the face, neck, chest, and hands are most frequently treated. These are the areas most exposed to the sun and often show the first signs of aging.
The IPL Process
The Treatment
During the procedure, the IPL device will be gently pressed against your skin, and you’ll feel brief pulses of light. Some patients describe the sensation as a snapping or tingling feeling, similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin. Most patients tolerate the procedure well, but if you’re particularly sensitive, topical numbing cream can be applied beforehand to make you more comfortable.
The treatment usually takes anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated. Afterward, you can immediately return to your normal activities, although it’s essential to follow some aftercare instructions to ensure the best outcome.
What Will Your Skin Look Like After IPL?
Pigmentation Changes
If you were treated for pigmentation issues like sun spots, freckles, or age spots, you’ll notice that the dark spots may look darker at first. This is completely normal and is a sign that the treatment is working.
In many cases, these spots will take on a “coffee ground” appearance—a brown, granular texture that is similar to the appearance of ground coffee. This is the pigment breaking down and being pushed to the surface to flake off. This is completely normal and is a sign that the treatment is working.
Redness and Swelling
You may also experience some redness and swelling, similar to a mild sunburn, for a few hours to a day after the procedure.
Post-Treatment Care
After the treatment, it is important to avoid sun exposure and use sunscreen for at least 7 days. We also recommend avoiding intense physical activity, and harsh skincare products (like retinoids or exfoliants) for a few days after the procedure to give your skin time to recover.
How Long Does It Take to See Results?
Most patients notice initial improvements after a few days to a week, particularly in terms of reduced redness and faded pigmentation. Full results can take a few weeks to manifest as the skin continues to heal and regenerate. Most patients generally have anywhere between 1-4 IPL treatments spaced 3 weeks apart.
Is IPL Right for You?
The best candidates for IPL are individuals with fair to medium skin tones who are dealing with issues like age spots, sun damage, or mild vascular concerns. It’s important to note that IPL is not ideal for individuals with darker skin tones or sun-tanned skin.
